potter
A person who makes clay pots and dishes.
A potter is someone who makes objects out of clay, shaping bowls, plates, vases, and other useful or decorative items. Potters work at a spinning wheel, using their hands to form wet clay into smooth, symmetrical shapes as it rotates. After shaping the clay, they fire it in an extremely hot oven called a kiln, which hardens the clay permanently and makes it waterproof.
Pottery is one of humanity's oldest crafts, dating back over 20,000 years. Ancient potters created vessels for storing grain, water, and oil, which helped early civilizations preserve food and transport goods. Different cultures developed distinctive pottery styles: Greek potters made elegant vases decorated with mythological scenes, Japanese potters perfected delicate tea bowls, and Native American potters created beautiful painted vessels without using wheels at all.
As a verb, potter can also mean to work in an aimless, relaxed way. When you potter around the house on a Saturday morning, you're doing small tasks without any particular hurry or plan, maybe organizing your bookshelf or rearranging things on your desk. This sense of the word suggests pleasant, unhurried activity rather than focused work.
