powerless
Not able to control or change what is happening.
Powerless means lacking the ability, authority, or strength to make something happen or to stop something from happening. When you feel powerless, you're in a situation where you can't control what's going on, no matter how much you might want to.
A child watching their parents argue might feel powerless to make them stop. A student who studied hard but still struggles with a confusing test question experiences that frustrating sense of being powerless to show what they actually know. When a wildfire spreads despite firefighters' best efforts, they may feel temporarily powerless against nature's force.
Being powerless is different from being weak or lazy. Someone can be strong, smart, and hardworking but still face situations beyond their control. A lifeguard is powerless to help a swimmer who's too far away to reach in time. A doctor might feel powerless when medical science hasn't yet discovered a cure for a patient's illness.
The word can also describe people who lack authority or influence. In history, powerless groups often couldn't vote, own property, or make decisions about their own lives. When people organize together, they often do so because individually they feel powerless to create change, but collectively they become powerful.
Understanding the difference between being truly powerless and just needing a new approach is an important idea as you grow older.
