prayer
Speaking to God or a higher power, often asking for help.
Prayer is the act of speaking to God or a divine power, usually to express gratitude, ask for help, seek guidance, or simply connect with something greater than yourself. People pray in countless ways: some bow their heads and fold their hands, some kneel, some stand with arms raised, and some sit quietly in meditation. Some prayers use memorized words passed down through generations, while others are spontaneous conversations spoken from the heart.
Prayer has been central to human life across nearly every culture and time period. Christians might pray to God through Jesus, Muslims pray to Allah while facing Mecca, Jews pray using ancient Hebrew texts, Hindus might pray to various deities, and Buddhists meditate as a form of spiritual practice. Even people who don't follow a particular religion sometimes pray when facing difficult situations or feeling grateful for good fortune.
The word can also describe any sincere hope or wish, even outside religious contexts. A coach whose team is down by one point with seconds left might say, “I'm praying we can pull this off,” meaning they desperately hope for success. When someone says something is their prayer or their fervent prayer, they mean it's their deepest wish.
Whether spoken aloud or silently in someone's mind, prayer represents a fundamental human desire to reach beyond ourselves and connect with something meaningful.
