precinct
A specific area or district within a larger place.
A precinct is a specific section or district within a larger area, usually created for organizational purposes. Think of it like dividing a big pizza into slices so everyone knows which piece belongs to them.
The word appears most often in two contexts:
- Police precincts divide a city into smaller areas, with each precinct having its own station and officers responsible for that neighborhood. If you live in the 14th precinct, those are the officers who patrol your streets and respond to calls in your area. Police shows on TV often feature detectives working out of their precinct station.
- Voting precincts split cities and towns into districts where people go to vote. On election day, you vote at your precinct's polling place, usually a nearby school, library, or community center. Election workers count the votes from each precinct separately, which helps ensure accuracy and makes the whole process more manageable.
The word can also refer to the area immediately surrounding an important building. The precincts of a cathedral might include the gardens and courtyards around it. When used this way (usually plural), it means the space right around or very near a significant place.
