predictability
The quality of being easy to guess or expect.
Predictability is the quality of being easy to predict or know in advance. When something has predictability, you can guess what's going to happen next with confidence. A predictable pattern in math class means you can figure out the next number in the sequence. A predictable story means you can tell how it will end before you finish reading.
Predictability can be helpful or limiting, depending on the situation. Scientists value predictability because it means they can trust their experiments to work the same way each time. A predictable bus schedule helps you know when to leave for school. But too much predictability can make things boring: a movie where you know exactly what will happen loses its excitement.
In relationships, some predictability creates comfort and trust. You want to predict that your friend will keep their promises or that your parents will pick you up on time. But unpredictable surprises, like an unexpected party or a spontaneous adventure, often make life more fun. The opposite of predictability is unpredictability or randomness, where you have no idea what might happen next.
