preference
What you like or choose more than other options.
A preference is what you like or choose when given options. If you prefer chocolate ice cream over vanilla, chocolate is your preference. If your teacher asks whether you'd rather work alone or with a partner, whichever you choose shows your preference.
Everyone has preferences about countless things: foods, books, music, how to spend free time, even which subjects they enjoy most in school. Your best friend might have a preference for soccer while you prefer basketball. Neither choice is right or wrong; they're simply different preferences.
Having a preference doesn't mean you dislike the other options. You might have a preference for reading fantasy novels but still enjoy mysteries. When someone shows preferential treatment, they favor one person or option over others, which can sometimes seem unfair. If a referee shows preference for the home team by making one-sided calls, that's a problem. But in daily life, having preferences is natural and helps you make decisions that suit you best.
