pressing
Needing attention or action right away; very urgent.
Pressing describes something that demands immediate attention or action. When a problem is pressing, it can't wait until later: it needs to be dealt with right now. A teacher facing a pressing deadline to submit grades must finish that work before moving on to anything else. A family with pressing financial concerns needs to address their money problems urgently, not next month or next year.
That's why pressing matters feel heavy and unavoidable. When a coach tells the team there's a pressing need for better defense, she means this problem requires immediate focus, before the next game.
You'll also hear pressing used for making something flat or smooth by applying pressure. Your parents might press their clothes with an iron to remove wrinkles. Workers press metal sheets to shape them. Cider makers press apples to extract juice.
Notice that pressing matters combine importance with urgency: they need your attention right now, not later. Studying for college is important, but studying for tomorrow's quiz is pressing. Learning the difference helps you figure out what truly needs your attention right now versus what can wait for the right time.
