preteen
A child around 9 to 12, not yet a teenager.
A preteen is a child between the ages of about 9 and 12, not quite a teenager yet but no longer a little kid either. The word combines “pre” (meaning before) with “teen,” capturing that in-between stage before someone turns thirteen.
Preteens are old enough to handle more responsibility and independence than younger children, but they're still figuring out who they are. A preteen might want to pick out their own clothes, have more say in family decisions, or spend more time with friends. At the same time, they still need guidance and support from parents and teachers.
This age brings big changes: bodies start growing faster, interests shift, and friendships become more complex. A preteen might suddenly care deeply about things that didn't matter before, like having their own style or being taken seriously. Schools recognize this transition too, which is why many communities have separate middle schools for preteens, bridging elementary school and high school.
Kids this age are also called tweens. Both words describe the same exciting, sometimes confusing period when you're becoming more independent while still being a kid.
