prime contractor
The main company in charge of a big building project.
A prime contractor is the main company or person responsible for completing a large project, especially a construction or government project. When a school district decides to build a new school, they hire a prime contractor to manage the entire job. That contractor then coordinates all the different specialized workers: electricians to wire the building, plumbers to install the pipes, carpenters to frame the walls, and so on.
The prime contractor is called “prime” because they're first in line, holding the main contract and taking overall responsibility. They might hire dozens of subcontractors (specialists who work on specific parts), but the prime contractor makes sure everyone shows up on time, the work meets safety standards, and the project finishes on schedule. If something goes wrong, the prime contractor answers for it.
Think of it like being the captain of a group project at school. You might assign different tasks to different team members, but you're responsible for making sure the whole project comes together properly. The prime contractor does this on a much larger scale, managing budgets of millions of dollars and coordinating hundreds of workers. When the government needs a new bridge or a company needs a factory built, the prime contractor is the one who makes it all happen.
