primetime
The evening hours when the most popular TV shows air.
Primetime is the evening hours when television networks broadcast their most popular and important shows, typically between 8:00 and 11:00 PM. During primetime, more people are watching TV than at any other time of day because families have finished dinner, homework is done, and people are relaxing before bed. Networks save their best programs for these hours: championship sports games, season finales of popular series, and special events that they hope millions will watch.
The term makes sense when you think about it: if you're a TV network, these are your prime hours, your best chance to reach the biggest audience. Advertisers pay more money to show commercials during primetime because so many people are watching.
The word has expanded beyond television. When someone says a performer or athlete is ready for primetime, they mean that person is prepared for the biggest stage and toughest competition. A basketball player who dominates in practice might not be primetime-ready until they can handle the pressure of a championship game with thousands of fans watching. In this sense, primetime represents the moment when it really counts, when the most people are paying attention and the stakes are highest.
