prince
A male royal, usually the son of a king or queen.
A prince is the son of a king or queen, or a male member of a royal family. In most monarchies, the oldest prince becomes the next king when his parent dies or steps down. Prince William of the United Kingdom, for example, is expected to become king someday after his father, King Charles III.
Not every prince will become king, though. Younger sons of monarchs are also princes, but they usually won't inherit the throne unless something unexpected happens to their older siblings. Some countries give the title prince to other male relatives of the king or queen, like grandsons or nephews.
In fairy tales and legends, princes often go on quests, rescue people in danger, or show unusual courage and nobility. The term has come to suggest someone who acts with special grace, kindness, or bravery. When someone calls a boy “a real prince,” they usually mean he acted especially thoughtful or generous, like when he helps a younger student who's struggling or stands up for someone being treated unfairly.
The word can also refer to rulers of small territories. Monaco, for instance, is ruled by a prince rather than a king. The leader of this small European country holds the title Prince of Monaco and has real governmental authority, not just a ceremonial role.
