problem
Something that needs to be figured out or fixed.
A problem is a situation that needs to be solved or fixed. When you encounter a problem, something isn't working the way it should, or something stands between you and what you're trying to accomplish.
Problems come in all sizes. A math problem might ask you to find the area of a rectangle. A problem with your bicycle might be a flat tire that keeps you from riding. A problem in a friendship might be a misunderstanding that needs clearing up. Scientists work on problems like curing diseases or understanding how the universe began.
What makes something a problem is that there's a gap between how things are and how you want them to be. The flat tire is a problem because you want to ride but can't. The math question is a problem because you need to figure out the answer. Difficulty alone doesn't make something a problem: you might find climbing a tree difficult, but it's only a problem if that difficulty prevents you from reaching a goal.
People often talk about problem-solving, which means finding ways to overcome obstacles or fix what's wrong. Some problems have one clear solution, like a jigsaw puzzle. Others have many possible solutions, like how to organize a school fundraiser. The most interesting problems often require creativity, persistence, and trying different approaches until something works.
When something is described as problematic, it means it causes difficulties or concerns that need attention.
