prominence
The state of being important and easily noticed.
Prominence means being important, well-known, or standing out in a noticeable way. When someone achieves prominence in their field, they become widely recognized for their work or accomplishments. A scientist might rise to prominence after making an important discovery, or a writer might gain prominence after publishing a bestselling novel.
A prominent nose is one that sticks out noticeably. A prominent building in a city skyline stands taller than those around it. A prominent rock formation rises above the surrounding landscape.
In conversation, you'll often hear about prominent citizens (well-known community members), prominent features (the most noticeable characteristics of something), or someone holding a prominent position (an important role).
Notice how prominence combines two ideas: visibility and importance. A prominent citizen matters to their community in a way that makes them visible. A prominent student leader stands out because they hold real influence. When something or someone has prominence, they command attention because of their significance, making them both important and noticeable.
