promptness
Being on time and not making others wait.
Promptness means arriving or doing something right on time, or even a little early. When you show up for soccer practice at exactly 3:00 PM as promised, that's promptness. When you turn in your homework the day it's due rather than asking for an extension, you're demonstrating promptness.
The word comes from the idea of being prompt, which means quick and without delay. Someone known for their promptness doesn't make others wait. If your dentist appointment is at 2:00 PM and the dentist sees you at 2:00 PM, the dentist's office runs with promptness. If a friend always shows up 15 minutes late, they lack promptness.
Promptness can show respect for other people's time. When you arrive promptly for a piano lesson, your teacher can use the full hour to help you improve. When the school bus arrives promptly each morning, students get to class on time. In many jobs, employees are expected to be prompt, and businesses that don't deliver goods promptly may lose customers.
The opposite of promptness is tardiness or lateness. While everyone runs late occasionally, consistent promptness builds trust and shows others you take commitments seriously.
