protein
A nutrient that helps your body grow, repair, and stay strong.
Protein is one of the three main types of nutrients your body needs to grow, repair itself, and stay healthy. Every cell in your body contains protein, from your muscles and bones to your skin and hair. When you eat foods like chicken, beans, eggs, or nuts, your body breaks down their proteins into smaller building blocks called amino acids, then rearranges these blocks to build the specific proteins your body needs.
Think of proteins as your body's construction materials and repair crew. When you exercise and your muscles get tiny tears, protein helps rebuild them stronger. When you get a cut, protein helps form new skin. Your body even uses proteins to fight off infections and carry oxygen through your blood.
Different foods contain different amounts of protein. Meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products have lots of protein. So do beans, lentils, and nuts. Athletes often eat extra protein to help their muscles recover after training, but everyone needs protein every day just to maintain their body. Without enough protein, kids wouldn't grow properly, and adults couldn't repair the normal wear and tear their bodies experience. That's why protein appears on nutrition labels and why parents care that you eat protein-rich foods regularly.
