prune
A dried, wrinkly plum often eaten as a snack.
The word prune has two distinct meanings:
- To trim or cut back plants by removing dead branches, overgrown stems, or excess growth. When gardeners prune rose bushes in early spring, they cut away old wood so the plant can grow stronger and healthier. A fruit tree that's been properly pruned produces better fruit because its energy flows to fewer, stronger branches. People also use this word more broadly: you might prune your bookshelf by removing books you'll never read again, or prune your essay by cutting unnecessary sentences.
- A dried plum. Prunes are wrinkly, dark purple, and sweet, made by drying fresh plums until most of their water evaporates. While fresh plums are juicy and firm, prunes are chewy and concentrated in flavor. They're known for helping digestion, which is why people sometimes eat them as a healthy snack. The wrinkled appearance of prunes has led to an unflattering expression: someone might joke that after a long bath, their fingers look like prunes because the skin gets so wrinkled.
