psychic
A person who claims to have special mind-reading powers.
The word psychic has two main meanings:
- Someone who claims to have special mental powers that go beyond normal human abilities. A psychic might say they can read minds, predict the future, or communicate with spirits. Throughout history, people have wondered whether such abilities are real or if psychics are simply very good at reading body language, making lucky guesses, or using clever tricks. Scientists have tested many people claiming psychic powers, and none have proven they can do things that can't be explained by ordinary means like coincidence, observation, or deception.
- Relating to the mind rather than the physical world. When someone has a psychic connection with their twin, they might mean they understand each other's thoughts and feelings unusually well, not that they're actually reading each other's minds through supernatural powers. A psychic wound is emotional damage that hurts your feelings and thoughts rather than your body.
