punchline
The final part of a joke that makes it funny.
A punchline is the final part of a joke that makes it funny. It's the surprise ending that catches you off guard and makes you laugh. When someone tells a joke, they build up the story or question, and then the punchline delivers the unexpected twist that creates the humor.
For example, in the joke “Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side,” the phrase “to get to the other side” is the punchline. It works because you expect something clever or silly, but instead you get a surprisingly simple answer.
A good punchline catches you by surprise. If you see it coming from a mile away, or if the joke-teller has to explain it afterward, the punchline loses its power.
You might hear someone say “I won't spoil the punchline” when they're about to tell a funny story, meaning they won't give away the ending. Or someone might complain that a friend always jumps to the punchline, ruining jokes by blurting out the ending too quickly. Great comedians master the art of timing, building tension before delivering the punchline at exactly the right moment.
