push-up
An exercise where you push your straight body up and down.
A push-up is an exercise where you start face-down on the floor with your hands flat beneath your shoulders, then push your body up until your arms are straight, and lower yourself back down. Your body stays rigid like a plank from head to heels the whole time.
Push-ups build strength in your chest, shoulders, arms, and core muscles. They're popular because you can do them anywhere without any equipment. Soldiers, athletes, and regular people use push-ups to stay strong and fit.
Some people can do dozens of push-ups in a row, while beginners might struggle with just a few. That's normal: everyone starts somewhere. You can make push-ups easier by keeping your knees on the ground, or harder by elevating your feet or clapping your hands between repetitions.
