ram
A male sheep with large, curved horns.
The word ram has several meanings:
- To strike or crash into something with great force. A battering ram was a medieval weapon that soldiers used to ram through castle gates. Today, a car might ram into a tree during an accident, or an angry bull might ram its horns against a fence. The action is sudden, forceful, and direct.
- A male sheep, especially one that's full-grown. While female sheep are called ewes and young sheep are called lambs, a ram is the adult male, often with curved horns. Rams use those impressive horns to ram into each other when competing for leadership of the flock.
- To push or force something into a tight space. You might ram clothes into an overstuffed suitcase, or ram books onto a shelf that's already full. This use suggests forcing something where it doesn't quite want to go, often without much care or gentleness.
