rankle
To keep bothering or upsetting someone for a long time.
When something rankles, it irritates or bothers you in a way that doesn't go away. It's that nagging feeling when something unfair or insulting keeps bugging you, even days later. You might still feel rankled by a friend's thoughtless comment from last week, or by losing a game because of a bad call.
The word captures a specific kind of annoyance: not the quick flash of anger that fades fast, but the slow-burning irritation that keeps coming back to your mind. If your little brother got credit for something you did, that injustice might rankle you every time you think about it. The feeling festers like a splinter you can't quite reach.
Notice that rankle works differently than simple anger. You don't say “I rankle at you.” Instead, you say “It rankles me that...” or “I'm still rankled by...” The irritation comes from a situation or memory, not directly from a person in the moment. When something rankles, it's gotten under your skin and refuses to leave, like an itch you can't scratch.
