rap
A style of music with fast, rhythmic spoken words.
Rap is a style of music where words are spoken rhythmically and rapidly over a beat, rather than sung with melody. A rapper performs by fitting lots of words into each musical measure, matching the rhythm of the drums and bass. When done well, rap sounds like powerful poetry set to music.
Rap emerged in the 1970s in New York City, where DJs played records at block parties while MCs (short for “masters of ceremonies”) spoke rhythmically over the music to energize the crowd. Rappers often tell stories, express ideas, or show off clever wordplay. Many rappers work hard to develop their skills: they practice writing rhymes, study rhythm patterns, and learn to control their breath so they can deliver long verses without stopping.
As a verb, to rap means to perform this kind of rhythmic speech. Rap can also mean informal conversation or discussion. When friends sit down to have a rap about something important, they're having a serious talk. A rap sheet is a criminal record, showing someone's history of arrests. And getting a bad rap means receiving unfair criticism or an undeserved bad reputation.
