Readiness is the state of being fully prepared and able to act when the moment comes. When you're in a state of readiness, you've done everything necessary so you can respond effectively without scrambling or panicking.
A firefighter maintains readiness by keeping their equipment clean and organized, staying physically fit, and practicing emergency procedures. That way, when the alarm sounds, they can spring into action instantly. A student shows readiness for a math test by studying the material, getting enough sleep, and arriving on time with sharp pencils and a clear mind.
Readiness combines preparation with the right mental attitude. You might have all the tools you need, but without focus and confidence, you're not truly ready. Athletes talk about mental readiness, a state where their body is trained and their mind is calm and focused.
The opposite of readiness is being caught off guard or unprepared. When a teacher announces a pop quiz, students who kept up with their homework are in a state of readiness, while those who didn't are frantically trying to remember yesterday's lesson.
