Rebellious means refusing to follow rules or accept authority, especially when those rules feel unfair or too controlling. A rebellious student might challenge classroom rules they think are unnecessary, while a rebellious teenager might push back against their parents' curfew.

The word comes from rebel, which originally described people who fought against their government or ruler. Throughout history, rebellious colonists overthrew kings, rebellious citizens demanded voting rights, and rebellious activists challenged unjust laws. Not all rebellion is bad: sometimes being rebellious means standing up for what's right when authorities are wrong.

But rebellious can also describe someone who resists rules just for the sake of resisting, even sensible ones. A rebellious kid might refuse to wear a coat in winter simply because their parent suggested it, even though they'll be cold. That kind of rebellion is just stubbornness in disguise.
