In genetics, a recessive trait is one that usually only shows up when an organism inherits two copies of the gene for that trait, one from each parent. If you inherit even one copy of a dominant version, the recessive trait often stays hidden.
Think of it like a tug-of-war where one side is much stronger. In many cases, blue eyes are recessive, while brown eyes are dominant. If you inherit a blue-eye gene from one parent and a brown-eye gene from the other, you'll usually have brown eyes because the brown-eye gene wins. You'd need to inherit blue-eye genes from both parents to have blue eyes.
This is why two brown-eyed parents can have a blue-eyed child: each parent might carry a hidden blue-eye gene. When both parents pass along that recessive gene, the child gets two copies, and blue eyes finally appear.
Scientists use recessive traits to understand heredity and track how characteristics pass through families. Some recessive traits are harmless, like attached earlobes or straight hair. Others, like certain genetic diseases, only appear when someone inherits two copies of a problem gene. Understanding recessive inheritance helps doctors predict health risks and helps breeders understand which traits will appear in plants and animals.
