reclamation
The act of taking something back or making it useful again.
Reclamation is the act of taking something back or restoring it to usefulness. When engineers work on land reclamation, they transform unusable land, like swamps or deserts, into places where people can build or farm. The Netherlands is famous for reclaiming land from the sea, building dikes and pumping out water to create new ground where cities now stand.
Reclamation applies to many situations. A library trying to get back overdue books practices book reclamation. Environmental scientists work on ecosystem reclamation, healing damaged forests or polluted rivers until they can support wildlife again. Communities sometimes focus on cultural reclamation, reviving traditions or languages that were nearly lost.
You might see “reclaimed wood” in furniture stores: old barn boards or factory beams given new life as tables or shelves. The wood is rescued from being thrown away and restored to purpose. When we reclaim something, we're saying it still has value and deserves another chance to be useful or meaningful.
