reclassify
To sort something into a new or different group.
To reclassify means to put something into a different category or group than it was in before. When you reclassify something, you're taking a second look and deciding it belongs somewhere else.
Scientists might reclassify an animal after discovering new information about it. In everyday cooking, people often treat tomatoes like vegetables, but botanists classify them as fruits because they grow from flowers and contain seeds. Libraries reclassify books when they reorganize their shelves, moving a biography from one section to another. A teacher might reclassify a student's essay from “needs improvement” to “satisfactory” after the student revises it.
Schools sometimes reclassify students into different reading groups as their skills improve. Museums reclassify artifacts when researchers learn more about where they came from or what they were used for.
Reclassification happens when we gain new knowledge, change our perspective, or realize our original classification wasn't quite right. It's a reminder that categories aren't always permanent, and that sometimes we need to reconsider where things truly belong.
