rectify
To fix a mistake or problem and make it right.
To rectify something means to correct it or make it right. When you rectify a mistake on your homework, you fix the error. When a store rectifies a billing problem, they correct the charge and make things fair again.
If you accidentally hurt a friend's feelings, you might rectify the situation by apologizing sincerely and explaining what you really meant.
Rectify means properly addressing a problem to make things genuinely right again, taking real action rather than offering quick fixes or excuses. A teacher who discovers an unfair test question might rectify the situation by adjusting everyone's grades accordingly. A company that ships the wrong product rectifies its error by sending the correct item and offering an apology.
In more technical contexts, rectify can mean to purify or refine something, like when chemists rectify alcohol through distillation. In electronics, a rectifier converts alternating current to direct current, essentially “straightening out” the electrical flow.
When you rectify something, you take real action to set things straight and restore what should have been right in the first place.
