A rector is the head priest or minister in charge of a church, particularly in the Episcopal, Anglican, or Catholic traditions. The rector leads worship services, gives sermons, oversees the church's activities, and guides the congregation. Think of the rector as similar to a principal at a school: just as a principal manages the school and looks after students and teachers, a rector manages the church and cares for the people who worship there.

In many churches, the rector lives in a house called a rectory, often located near the church building itself. This allows the rector to be readily available when members of the congregation need spiritual guidance or help.

In some universities, particularly in Europe, a rector serves as the head administrator, similar to what Americans call a university president. At the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, for example, the rector is elected to represent students and help govern the institution.

The position requires someone who can teach, counsel, organize, and inspire others. A good rector knows their community well and works to bring people together around shared beliefs and values.
