red-letter
Very special and important, worth remembering and celebrating.
Red-letter day is a day marked as special or memorable, usually because something wonderful or important happens on it.
When your team wins the championship, that's a red-letter day. When you ace a test you studied hard for, or when your family takes an amazing trip together, those become red-letter days you'll remember for years. The day you learned to ride a bike without training wheels was probably a red-letter day in your life.
The term suggests genuine significance: an achievement, a celebration, or an experience that stands out from ordinary life. A fun afternoon playing with friends is nice, but a red-letter day represents something bigger and more meaningful. You might circle these special days on your calendar in actual red ink, marking them as days worth remembering and celebrating.
People sometimes use red-letter to describe other special things too, like “a red-letter moment in history” when something extraordinary happens. The opposite would be just another regular day that blends in with all the rest.
