regalia
Special clothing and objects that show someone’s official position.
Regalia refers to the special objects and clothing that symbolize royal authority or official status. When a king or queen wears their crown, holds their scepter, and sits on their throne during a coronation, all of these items together are the royal regalia.
Throughout history, regalia have been carefully guarded and treated as sacred objects. The British Crown Jewels, for example, include crowns, orbs, and swords that have been used in coronation ceremonies for centuries. These objects are symbols of power: they represent the authority and responsibility of rulership.
Today, the word has expanded beyond royalty. A judge's black robe is part of judicial regalia. Universities have academic regalia: professors wear special robes, hoods, and caps during graduation ceremonies to show their scholarly achievements. Even some clubs and organizations have their own regalia, like badges, sashes, or ceremonial objects.
When you see someone in full regalia, you're seeing them dressed in the official outfit and carrying the special objects that represent their position or accomplishment. Regalia can transform an ordinary person into a symbol of authority or achievement.
