region
An area of land that shares similar features or traits.
A region is an area of land that shares certain characteristics, setting it apart from neighboring places. These defining features might be physical (like a mountain region with high peaks and steep valleys), cultural (like a region where most people speak the same language), or economic (like an agricultural region where farms dominate the landscape).
Regions can be any size. The Amazon region of South America spans multiple countries and contains the world's largest rainforest. A polar region covers the extreme north or south of Earth. But regions can also be smaller: your town might have a downtown region with shops and offices, or an industrial region where factories operate.
Geographers and historians use region to organize and understand the world. When studying ancient civilizations, you might read about the Mediterranean region, where cultures around that sea shared trade routes and ideas. In weather forecasts, meteorologists talk about regions expecting rain or snow.
The word emphasizes what areas have in common rather than exact borders. If someone asks what region you're from, they usually want a general answer like “the Northeast” or “the Southwest,” not your specific street address. Thinking in terms of regions helps us see patterns and connections across larger areas.
