regional
Related to a particular area or part of a country.
Regional describes something that relates to a particular region or area, rather than a whole country or the entire world. A regional accent is the way people speak in one part of a country: someone from Boston sounds different from someone from Texas because they have different regional accents. Regional foods are dishes that people in certain areas love but might be unknown elsewhere: deep-dish pizza is a regional specialty of Chicago, while gumbo is a regional specialty of Louisiana.
The word helps us understand that the world isn't uniform. Regional customs, regional wildlife, regional weather patterns, and regional traditions all vary from place to place. A bookstore might stock regional authors whose stories take place in the area where the store is located. A regional championship determines the best team in a particular region before winners compete at a national level.
When something is regional rather than national or international, it means its influence or presence is concentrated in a specific geographic area. This can make regional things feel special and distinctive, like discovering a regional candy you've never heard of when visiting relatives in another state, or learning about regional history that shapes how people in an area live today.
