renounce
To formally give up something important or a right.
To renounce means to formally give up or reject something you once claimed, believed, or had rights to. When someone renounces their citizenship, they officially declare they're no longer a citizen of that country. When a king renounces his throne, he's voluntarily giving up his right to rule.
The word carries a sense of seriousness and finality. You renounce beliefs you once held deeply, positions of power, or legal claims to something valuable. A person might renounce violence after years of fighting, or renounce a fortune they inherited because they disagree with how it was earned.
Renouncing requires making a clear, public statement: “I no longer accept this,” or “I give this up entirely.” Sometimes people renounce things for moral reasons, like renouncing a title gained through dishonest means. Other times they renounce something to follow a new path, like monks who renounce worldly possessions to focus on spiritual life.
