resort
A vacation place where people go to relax and have fun.
To resort to something means to turn to it as a solution, usually when other options have failed or when you're in a difficult situation. When a teacher resorts to raising her voice, it means she tried other ways to get the class's attention first. When hikers get lost and resort to eating berries, it suggests they've run out of their regular food supply.
The word often appears with “to”: you resort to asking for help, or resort to using a calculator. There's usually a sense that this wasn't your first choice. You might resort to walking to school when you miss the bus, or resort to looking up words in the dictionary when you can't figure them out from context.
A resort (noun) is also a place where people go for vacation and relaxation, like a beach resort or ski resort. These places typically offer lodging, activities, and entertainment all in one location.
When something is a last resort, it's the final option you'll try only after everything else has failed. People say “as a last resort,” meaning “only if absolutely necessary.”
