restrict
To limit what someone can do or use.
To restrict means to put limits on something or keep it within certain boundaries. When your parents restrict your screen time to one hour per day, they're setting a rule that prevents you from using devices longer than that. When a library restricts who can check out certain books, it might require parental permission or a certain age.
The word often appears when rules or circumstances prevent complete freedom. A doctor might restrict a patient's diet after surgery, allowing only soft foods. A drought might force a city to restrict water use, banning lawn watering and car washing. Schools restrict access to certain websites on student computers.
Restrictions are the actual limits being placed. Sometimes restrictions protect people: age restrictions on movies help ensure young viewers don't see upsetting content. Other restrictions might feel frustrating but serve a purpose, like when a teacher restricts talking during independent work time so everyone can concentrate.
When something is unrestricted, it has no limits at all. A restrictive rule is one that limits freedom in a significant way.
