rift
A serious split or separation in a relationship.
A rift is a serious break in a friendship or relationship, or a deep crack in the earth's surface.
When two friends have a rift, they've had a disagreement or conflict serious enough that they stop being close. Maybe best friends had a huge argument about something important, and now they barely speak to each other. A rift can also develop between family members, like siblings who grow distant after a fight, or between countries whose governments stop cooperating. The word suggests something that was once whole and connected has now split apart.
In geology, a rift is a long, deep crack where the earth's crust is literally pulling apart. The East African Rift is a famous example: a massive valley system where tectonic plates are slowly separating. Over millions of years, these rifts can widen into new oceans. Iceland sits on a rift where two tectonic plates meet, which is why the island has so many volcanoes and hot springs.
Both meanings share the idea of separation and splitting. Just as a rift in the earth creates a visible gap in the landscape, a rift in a relationship creates an emotional distance between people who were once close. Some rifts can be repaired through honest conversation and forgiveness, while others remain permanent divides.
