romper
A one-piece outfit that combines a shirt and shorts.
A romper is a one-piece garment that combines a shirt and shorts into a single outfit. Imagine taking a t-shirt and sewing it directly to a pair of shorts at the waistline: that's essentially what a romper is. Little kids often wear rompers because they're easy to put on (just step in and pull up!) and comfortable to play in.
Rompers were originally designed for young children who needed freedom to move around. When toddlers are crawling, climbing, and tumbling around a playground, a romper stays put and doesn't ride up like separate pieces might.
Today, people of all ages wear rompers in warm weather. They're popular at the beach, during summer activities, or just as casual everyday wear. Some rompers button or zip up the front, while others pull on like a jumpsuit.
The word can also describe the person doing the romping: a romper might be a playful puppy or an energetic child running around the backyard, full of energy and joy.
