room
Space that is available for people or things.
Room is the amount of space available for something or someone. When you have room to spread out at a lunch table, there's enough space for you and your things. When a closet has no room left, it's completely full. If your parents say there's no room in the budget for a new video game, they mean all their money is already allocated to other expenses.
The word also means an enclosed area within a building, separated by walls and doors. A classroom, a bedroom, a living room: these are all rooms. Houses are divided into rooms so different activities can happen in different spaces. You might do homework in one room, eat dinner in another, and sleep in a third.
When someone asks if there's room for improvement, they're asking whether something could be done better. When you make room for someone, you shift over to create space. And when people talk about having room to grow, they mean having space or opportunity to develop and get better at something. A carpenter might say she needs more elbow room to work comfortably, meaning enough physical space to move her arms freely without bumping into anything.
