rose
A flower with many petals that often smells sweet.
The word rose has two main meanings:
- The past tense of rise. When you say the sun rose this morning, you mean it came up over the horizon. Prices rose means they went up. A student who rose to answer a question stood up from their seat. The crowd rose to its feet when the home team scored. If someone's spirits rose, their mood improved and they felt happier. The verb rise describes upward movement or increase, and rose is what happened in the past.
- A type of flower known for its beautiful petals and often sweet smell. Roses grow on thorny bushes and come in many colors: red, pink, white, yellow, and more. People have cultivated roses for thousands of years, growing them in gardens and giving them as gifts. The phrase “coming up roses” means everything is working out wonderfully, while “no rose without a thorn” reminds us that good things often come with difficulties. Rose petals have been used to make perfume, and rose hips (the fruit of the rose plant) can be made into tea.
