ruthlessness
A cold, cruel way of acting without caring who gets hurt.
Ruthlessness means acting without mercy or compassion to achieve your goals, even when it hurts others. A ruthless person does whatever it takes to win or succeed, ignoring feelings, fairness, or the harm they cause along the way.
Think of a chess player who sacrifices every piece without hesitation to win, or a business owner who fires loyal workers just to save a few dollars. That calculated coldness, that willingness to crush anyone in your path, is ruthlessness.
Ruthlessness shows up in different ways. A ruthless dictator might imprison anyone who disagrees with him. A ruthless competitor might spread rumors about a teammate to take their starting position. In stories, ruthless villains often seem powerful at first, but their cruelty usually becomes their downfall because they make enemies everywhere they go.
Sometimes people confuse ruthlessness with determination or toughness, but they're different. Determination means working hard and refusing to quit. Ruthlessness means being willing to hurt others to get what you want. You can be tough and competitive without being ruthless. A great athlete fights hard to win but still respects opponents and plays by the rules.
