A sanctuary is a safe place where someone or something is protected from danger or harm. The word comes from ancient temples where people could seek protection, and it still carries that sense of being truly safe and sheltered.

Churches, temples, and other houses of worship are often called sanctuaries because they're meant to be peaceful places set apart from the troubles of everyday life. But the word extends far beyond religious buildings. A wildlife sanctuary protects endangered animals from hunters and habitat destruction, giving them space to live and breed safely. Bird sanctuaries along migration routes provide resting spots where exhausted travelers can find food and shelter.

You might also hear someone describe their bedroom or a favorite reading spot as their personal sanctuary, meaning a place where they feel completely safe and peaceful, away from noise and stress. When you find your sanctuary after a difficult day, you can finally relax and be yourself.

Historically, some places offered legal sanctuary, meaning authorities couldn't arrest someone who took refuge there. While this is rare today, the idea persists: sanctuaries are places where the normal rules are suspended to protect those inside. A city might declare itself a sanctuary for certain groups, or a person might find sanctuary with friends during tough times.
