save
To keep something safe so it is not lost or wasted.
The word save has several related meanings:
- To rescue someone or something from danger or harm. A lifeguard saves a struggling swimmer. A firefighter saves people from a burning building. You might save your little brother from embarrassment by quietly telling him he has spinach in his teeth before he talks to his friends.
- To keep something for later use instead of spending or using it now. When you save your allowance, you put it aside instead of spending it immediately. You might save half your Halloween candy to enjoy over the next few weeks, or save a seat for your friend at lunch.
- To prevent waste or loss. Turning off lights when you leave a room saves electricity. Finishing your dinner saves food from being thrown away. When you save time by doing homework right after school, you're using your afternoon efficiently rather than wasting it.
- In computers and video games, to store your work or progress so you don't lose it. You save your document while writing a story, and you save your game so you can pick up where you left off. Nothing feels worse than forgetting to save and losing hours of work.
Notice how all these meanings share a common thread: keeping something safe or preserving it, whether that's a person, money, resources, or information.
