scarf
A piece of cloth worn around your neck or head.
The word scarf has two different meanings:
- A piece of cloth worn around the neck, shoulders, or head for warmth or style. People wear scarves in winter to protect against cold wind, wrapping them snugly around their necks. Fashion scarves add color to an outfit, draped loosely or tied in different ways. In some cultures, scarves hold special meaning: a woman might wear a head scarf, while a cowboy might wear a bandana around his neck. Scarves come in all materials, from thick wool to light silk.
- To eat something quickly and hungrily. When you come home starving after soccer practice and scarf down your dinner in five minutes, you're eating fast, barely stopping to breathe. You might scarf cookies, scarf pizza, or scarf leftovers. The word suggests eagerness and speed, like you can't get the food in your mouth fast enough. If someone says “Don't scarf your food!” they're reminding you to slow down and chew properly.
