schedule
A plan that shows when different things will happen.
A schedule is a plan that shows when things will happen. Think of it like a map for time instead of space. Your school schedule tells you that math happens at 9:00, lunch at noon, and gym at 2:00. A train schedule shows which trains arrive at which times. A construction schedule maps out when workers will pour the foundation, frame the walls, and install the roof.
Today, schedules might be on paper, on a computer, or posted on a wall, but the purpose stays the same: helping people know what happens when.
When you schedule something (as a verb), you're deciding when it will happen and adding it to your plan. A dentist schedules appointments. A teacher schedules tests. You might schedule time to practice piano or finish homework.
Good schedules help people accomplish more because they're not wasting time figuring out what to do next. A baseball team follows a schedule so players know which days they have games. A factory uses schedules so workers and materials arrive at the right times. Without schedules, a busy school would dissolve into chaos, with everyone wandering around wondering where to go.
People sometimes say they're on schedule (progressing as planned) or behind schedule (running late). Being able to make and follow a schedule is a skill that helps in school, work, and life.
