schnauzer
A dog breed with bushy eyebrows, a beard, and wiry fur.
A schnauzer is a type of dog known for its distinctive bushy eyebrows, long beard, and wiry coat. The name comes from the German word for “snout” or “muzzle,” which fits perfectly since these dogs have such prominent, whiskered faces that they almost look like little old professors.
Schnauzers come in three sizes: miniature, standard, and giant. The standard schnauzer was originally bred in Germany hundreds of years ago to work on farms, catching rats and guarding property. These intelligent, energetic dogs became popular because they were both good workers and loyal companions. Their wiry coat protected them in all kinds of weather, and schnauzers don't shed much compared to many other dogs, making them a favorite for some people with allergies.
Today, schnauzers are mostly kept as pets. They're known for being alert, spirited, and sometimes a bit stubborn. A schnauzer will often bark to alert its family about anything unusual, whether it's a delivery truck or a squirrel in the yard. They're playful and affectionate with their families but can be reserved around strangers, still carrying that old guard dog instinct from their working days on German farms.
