schoolteacher
A person whose job is to teach students in school.
A schoolteacher is a person whose job is to help students learn, usually in an elementary, middle, or high school. Teachers explain new concepts, answer questions, assign homework, and guide students through subjects like math, science, history, and language arts.
The work involves much more than presenting information. A good schoolteacher plans lessons that make difficult ideas understandable, figures out why a struggling student isn't grasping fractions or grammar, and creates a classroom where everyone feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Teachers also grade assignments, meet with parents, organize field trips, and sometimes coach sports or lead clubs.
When someone says their aunt is a schoolteacher, you know she works in a school building with a whole classroom of students, not just one or two.
Schoolteacher is slightly old-fashioned. Today people usually say “teacher,” but the full word emphasizes the specific setting and the public service role. Teaching school has always been demanding work that requires patience, creativity, and genuine care for young people's growth and success.
