schoolyard
An outdoor area at a school where kids play and talk.
A schoolyard is the outdoor area at a school where students play during recess and lunch. It's the space with swings, slides, basketball hoops, or just open areas for running around and playing games like tag or kickball.
The schoolyard is where a lot of school life happens outside the classroom. Friendships form over games of four square. Kids learn to negotiate rules, take turns, and handle conflicts when someone disagrees about whether a ball was in or out. For many people, their strongest childhood memories come from schoolyard adventures: organizing elaborate games of capture the flag, trading collectibles, or just talking with friends while sitting on the monkey bars.
The word also appears in the phrase schoolyard bully, referring to someone who picks on other kids in that unstructured outdoor environment where teachers might not notice everything. But schoolyards are mostly places of freedom and fun, where kids get to choose their own activities and practice social skills that can't be taught from a textbook.
