sensitively
In a careful, gentle way that respects others’ feelings.
Sensitively means doing something with careful attention to others' feelings or to delicate situations. When you speak sensitively about a friend's disappointment, you choose your words carefully to avoid making them feel worse. When a teacher handles a conflict sensitively, she considers everyone's perspective before deciding what to do.
Acting sensitively means recognizing that a situation requires gentleness or thoughtfulness. A doctor might explain test results sensitively, making sure the patient understands without causing unnecessary worry. A student might sensitively invite a new classmate to join their group, noticing that the newcomer seems lonely.
Sensitively also applies to handling delicate objects or information. An archaeologist works sensitively with ancient artifacts that could crumble if handled roughly. A journalist might report sensitively on a tragedy, sharing important facts while respecting the privacy and dignity of those involved.
The opposite would be handling something clumsily or without regard for consequences. When you act sensitively, you're showing awareness that your words, actions, or decisions affect others, and you care enough to act thoughtfully.
