serenade
A special song or music played for someone you care about.
A serenade is a piece of music performed for someone as a romantic gesture or tribute, traditionally sung or played outdoors at night. Picture a musician standing beneath someone's window with a guitar, singing a love song by moonlight. That's the classic image of a serenade.
The word comes from evening customs centuries ago, when musicians would perform for nobles or loved ones under the stars. While we don't see as many literal window serenades today, the spirit lives on: a student might serenade their grandmother on her birthday by playing piano for her, or a school choir might serenade hospital patients during the holidays.
Serenade can work as a verb too: you might serenade your parents with a song you learned, even if you're just singing in the living room rather than beneath a window. The word carries a warmth and sweetness that simple phrases like “sing to” or “play for” don't quite capture. When you serenade someone, you're offering them music as a gift, a gesture that says they matter enough for you to create something beautiful just for them.
